Amazon opens Singapore office as SEA hub

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has expanded its presence in Singapore with a second corporate office at IOI Central Boulevard, positioning the city-state as its Asia Pacific hub.

The new office spans over 33,000 square metres across 8 floors and can accommodate up to 3,000 employees. AWS, a subsidiary of Amazon that provides on-demand cloud computing platforms and APIs to individuals, currently employs 2,500 people in Singapore.

AWS plans to expand its Singapore-based team in software engineering, machine learning, AI, data science, specialist technologies and data centre engineering, supporting customers and partners in digital transformations.

Investment and economic impact

AWS has invested over SGD 12bn in Singapore since 2010 and plans to invest more than SGD 23bn by 2028. This investment is expected to support an estimated 12,300 full-time jobs annually.

At the unveiling event on 12 February 2025, Singaporean Senior Minister of State for Digital Development and Information Janil Puthucheary recalled that the digital economy contributed SGD 113bn (USD 84bn) in 2023, amounting to 17.7% of Singapore’s nominal GDP.

“With technologies like AI, the boundaries of our productivity can be pushed further, and the competitiveness of our industries can be strengthened,” Puthucheary said adding that Singapore’s Smart Nation strategy aims to help businesses and workers harness AI’s potential.

Upskilling

Puthucheary reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upskilling the workforce, citing the Infocomm Media Development Authority’s Tech Skills Accelerator. Since 2016, the programme has placed over 17,000 people in technology jobs and trained 231,000 more in AI, cybersecurity and data analytics.

AWS will open an Innovation Hub by Q3 2025 to showcase emerging technologies such as generative AI, providing a collaborative space for the next generation of tech leaders.

Puthucheary said, “Opportunities for learning and experimentation are being created, but ideas must be exchanged, and collaborations must be creative for them to come alive.” He encouraged AWS to continue working with educational and training institutions to equip Singaporeans for the future of work.

Public-private collaboration

AWS launched AI Spring Singapore in 2024, a programme designed to accelerate AI adoption across public and private sector organisations.

“The opening of AWS’ Asia Pacific hub is a significant milestone, not just for AWS but for Singapore as well,” said Puthucheary. “It represents the next stage of our ambition and underscores our shared vision of a future powered by technology and driven by innovation.”

Puthucheary also backed public-private partnerships for fostering Singapore’s digital ecosystem, saying these complement government efforts.
