Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has visited the country’s southern provinces, promising new investments and infrastructure projects as part of its levelling-up agenda.

The Thai premier met local leaders in Phatthalung and Songkhla to discuss flood management and economic development. She wrote on Facebook that her government is “ready to work with local authorities to push Songkhla old town to become a tourist city, more colourful and lively, especially at night.

“Songkhla, as a connecting point for tourists from Malaysia and Singapore to other countries, is a city with potential for cruise ship tourism. I have asked the Transport Ministry to accelerate the study of the port construction to support tourists and stimulate the economy,” she added.

Gaming, cross-border crime in PM’s crosshairs

Economic concerns continue to dominate the policy agenda. Thailand’s GDP grew by 3.2% in the final quarter of 2024, below forecasts. Analysts warn that US trade policy could pose further risks to growth in 2025, as global supply chains adjust to new regulations.

With political uncertainty, regulatory debates, and economic headwinds shaping the national agenda, the Thai government faces a complex set of challenges as it seeks to maintain stability and growth in 2025. The government is aiming to attract THB 100bn in new investment while addressing concerns over organized crime and gambling addiction, as calls grow for regulatory reforms, particularly in the financial and gaming sectors. At the same time, China has increased its engagement in the region, with a top Chinese official visiting the Thai-Myanmar border to highlight a crackdown on scam centres.
